Textual Analysis

To begin my research into previous videos I've decided to analyse 3 previous Jackson 5 videos in relation to how me and my group wish to film our music video.

Me and my group wish to use Jackson 5's song ABC in our video therefore research into it's previous video was necessary. It appears Jackson 5 don't have an official video for the song, therefore allowing us to fully experiment without the worry of copying any ideas from an origional video.
From this video we get a sense of the different style of mise en scene used in the 70's. It's apparent they wore bright coloured clothing with flared jeans and oversized shirt collars.

They all have afro styled hair which was a popular hair style within the black culture of the 70's.
The back ground of the live video involves different bright colours and shapes, which reminds me of a childrens classroom. This holds a strong relation to the lyrics as they're based on teaching a person how to love.
The style of dancing was known as "disco" in the 70's and it's obvious Jackson 5 are very within the disco genre. There catchy melodies and upbeat rhythems prove this genre and there songs are still popular on the dance floor in the 21st century.

This is another Jackson 5 song called 'Blame it on the Boogie'.
It's apparent this song has an official video, although it's still very basic. The black background on the video contrasts well with the bright colours of the clothing, and the special rainbow effect which follows the dance actions of each band member.
Although this is an official video for the song and not just a video of a live performance, the dance movements and genreal mise en scene are very similar, therefore proving how underestablished music videos of the 70's were in comparrison to how they are today.
The costumes are still bright and include flared jeans and oversized shirt collers.

This is The Supremes with one of thier hit songs 'Stop in the Name of Love' .
The Supremes were around at the same time as Jackson 5 and as we can see the video is again underestablished technically when compared to todays music videos, e.g. black and white.
The Supremes were famous for the catchy disco songs and there elegant, glamarous fashions. This video represents them perfectly with long dresses and big wigs.
The typical genre which The Supremes sit perfectly into is Motown and this is also classed as a subsidary genre for Jackson 5.
